DJ Shadow, Gilles Peterson, Dave Clarke, Lady Leshurr & Daito Manabe among the highlights confirmed for Sónar Hong Kong


Sónar – Barcelona’s legendary festival celebrating music, creativity and technology, makes its highly anticipated Hong Kong debut on Saturday 1st April 2017. Taking place across six stages at Hong Kong Science Park, the groundbreaking festival has unveiled an impressive lineup of live acts and DJs, as well as details of Sónar+D, its creative technology programme.

With a mix of established artists – including DJ Shadow, Gilles Peterson and Dave Clarke – and emerging talent, like Lady Leshurr, Kingdom and Evian Christ, Hong Kong audiences can expect a diverse array of live and DJ performances, from dance-floor-driven sets to experimental electronica. Beyond the music, Sónar+D, features a series of creative tech-centred activities, including workshops, talks and an expo, plus interactive virtual reality and new media arts installations and performances.

Festival tickets go on sale from 7th February, and two categories are available: tickets for Sónar+D only are priced at HKD180, while tickets giving access to all music performances plus Sónar+D are priced at HKD780. The festival runs from 11am to 3am, and shuttle buses will operate between Hong Kong Science Park and convenient locations throughout the city, making it easy for attendees to access the festival site. Music: Championing the best and brightest in electronic music

Spanning the spectrum of electronic genres, Sónar’s expertly curated music programme features a diverse blend of established and emerging live acts and DJs encompassing the best in international, regional and local talent. With multiple stages to choose from, festivalgoers can enjoy a diverse range of live experiences, from large-scale outdoor spectacles to intimate indoor performances and immersive audio-visual shows.

Legendary Pioneers

A true innovator, DJ Shadow (US) made his name blending everything from hip-hop, funk and soul to rock, ambient and jazz on Endtroducing….., his seminal 1996 debut album. The acclaimed DJ and producer, who released his latest LP last year, is bringing his incredible full visual show to Hong Kong for the first time.

Hailed for his impeccable taste in music, DJ, producer and record label boss Gilles Peterson (UK) is one of the planet’s most important musical explorers. His incredible breadth of musical knowledge gives him an uncanny ability to bond with any audience. Quite simply a genre-blending legend of modern music.

Lady Leshurr (UK) has gained global recognition for her quick-witted rap soaked with a unique blend of humour and self-empowerment. Pushing grime into the mainstream spotlight alongside peers Skepta and Stormzy, the Birmingham MC has been touted by the NME as the “The Queen of Grime” amassing over 73 million collective YouTube views.  Don’t miss Lady Leshurr’s Asian debut at Sonar Hong Kong – a royal occasion which promises to be truly unforgettable.

DJ Shadow, Gilles Peterson and Lady Leshurr will perform with a clutch of other acts at SonarVillage, the festival’s largest outdoor stage with a capacity of 3,000. Featuring an emphasis on accessible music that appeals to multiple generations, this is the ideal spot to soak up the festival vibe.


Heavyweight Dance Masters

Dubbed “The Baron Of Techno”, Dave Clarke (UK) is known for producing dark and uncompromising techno and electro that fuels the world’s most discerning dance floors. A futurist and technology geek who embraced the digital revolution early, he is the ideal choice to close the inaugural edition of Sónar Hong Kong.

DJ, musician, label manager and all-round creative dynamo, Ellen Allien (DE) bestrides the club scenes of Berlin and Ibiza like a blonde colossus. Known for delivering sets of fierce and intense energy at festivals and clubs the world over, her first ever show in Hong Kong, this is a performance not to be missed.

Known for his genre-blending style and dazzling technical mastery of his craft, Clark (UK) is a Warp Records mainstay and one of the most consistently intriguing acts on the global electronic scene. Hong Kong is in for something truly special when he arrives to perform his scintillating live show one week before his new album release, only at Sónar.

Dave Clarke, Ellen Allien and Clark will perform at SonarClub, the festival’s largest indoor venue with a capacity of 1,000. Home to international DJs from around the world, as well as large-scale audio-visual performances, this is the place for dedicated dance lovers who want to revel in the clubbing atmosphere.


Edgy Electronica

Producer Evian Christ (UK) has forged an instantly recognisable sound melding hip-hop beats with ‘90s trance and grime. Having collaborated with Kanye West on Yeezus, Christ’s ascent into the popular consciousness will be complete with the release of his highly anticipated debut album on Warp later this year.

Evian Christ will perform at SonarLab, the stage that champions the most exceptional rising talents in electronica – the perfect spot to let loose with the city’s creative minds.


Sónar+D – Congress of Creative Technology

Sónar+D is a programme of forward-thinking workshops, talks and interactive activities designed to explore the relationship between creativity, technology, innovation and commerce in a relaxed and inspiring environment. Geared towards those with an interest in creative technology and digital culture, it offers opportunities for creative communities to meet, interact and exchange ideas while showcasing cutting-edge immersive experiences. As well as an expo that gives research centres, creative studios and other tech-focused companies the platform to preview new projects and prototypes, the event will showcase the latest innovations in virtual reality and new media arts through a curated series of interactive installations and high-tech audio-visual performances. Quite unlike any festival the city has previously seen, Sónar Hong Kong offers a unique opportunity for festivalgoers to experience the entire lifecycle of the creative process in an accessible way. From discovering new products at the prototype stage to attending master classes by artists and creative luminaries to enjoying breathtaking live performances, Sónar showcases all the links in the creative chain.


fabulous (Virtual Reality)

Selected as part of the first-ever VR selection at the Cannes Film Festival, fabulous is a four-minute virtual reality music video inspired by, the UK National Theatre’s musical created by Damon Albarn (frontman of the legendary British band Blur and creative mastermind behind Gorillaz), playwright Moira Buffini and National Theatre Artistic Director Rufus Norris. Inspired by Lewis Carroll’s iconic Alice in Wonderland, this interactive experience takes viewers down the rabbit hole as they don an VR headset and experience the magical, vibrant, digital world of As participants begin to immerse themselves in the kaleidoscopic dreamscape of, they will meet the Cheshire Cat, who hovers above them like a magnificent holographic airship and serenades them with fabulous, an original composition by Albarn with lyrics by Buffini. Whether you are a VR veteran or completely new to the technology, this is an experience that’s guaranteed to expand your horizons – and your mind.

Dirty Electronics (Workshop + Audio-Visual Performance)

Exploring the border between play and sound, and between listening and participating, POLYTIK is a collection of striking synth modules and limited-edition musical art objects designed by Dirty Electronics and Jack Featherstone, and produced by Artists & Engineers. In addition to hosting a 90-minute workshop in which participants will have the opportunity to create their own customised desktop modular synth, Dirty Electronics and Jack Featherstone will deliver an audio-visual performance awash with glitched-out feral noise and analogue sequences that spawn pattern after pattern of morphing geometric visuals to encourage audiences to explore the space between sound and vision. Xceed (Installation + Audio-Visual Performance + Talk)

A new media art collective based in Hong Kong, XCEED focuses on digital art installations, crafting spatial experiences and creating interactive audio-visual performances. In RadianceScape 2016, XCEED present an installation in which the sound and visuals are generated based on the radiation data collected from – a global sensor network for collecting and sharing radiation measurements. Resonance Aura IV is a dynamic 3D kinetic light sculpture inspired by the mechanics of a gyroscope. The installation composes an ambient atmosphere, helping the audience to reconcile their consciousness of their bodies. Chris Cheung (h0nh1m), the founder of the XCEED project, will also give a talk in which he shares the thinking behind XCEED’s new media artwork as well as the philosophy of his personal work. Check out the video here.

Daito Manabe (Talk + Audio-Visual Performance)

Daito Manabe is one of the most renowned digital artists in the world. Programmer, creator and interactive designer, Manabe pushes the boundaries of these fields to technical and creative unexplored territories. Manabe has been awarded the Prix Ars Electronica Interactive award, several Cannes Lions, and a three times winner of the Excellence Prize in the Japan Media Arts Festival. Manabe will deliver a keynote talk at Sónar+D 2017.

Additionally, Manabe will present his innovative collaborative show alongside LA producer Nosaj Thing as part of the Sonar Hong Kong music programme.
